SCUM
Directed by Allan Clarke, UK, 1979.
|
The hard and shocking story of life in a British Borstal for young offenders. Luckily the regime has changed since this film was made. The brutal regime made no attempt to reform or improve the inmates and actively encouraged a power struggle between the "tough" new inmate and the "old hands". The film was originally made as a BBC play but it was banned before ever being shown, so Alan Clarke and Roy Minton got it re-made as a film. A tough and brutal film - not be viewed lightly.

AUXXX : THOR'S FEATHERS #1
|
AUXXX presents a new concert series for solo drummers, beginning with one of the most dynamic drummers currently creating waves around the world...
CHRIS CORSANO
Chris Corsano has gained a well-earned reputation as one of the hardest-working drummers around. Equally at home with intense kinetic explosions of energy and concentrated near-silence, he effortlessly flows from one idea to the next, always sympatico with his fellow musicians. He has recorded and gigged with, among others, Paul Flaherty, Thurston Moore, Jessica Rylan, Jim O'Rourke, Matt Heyner, Michael Flower, Nels Cline, Jandek, Greg Kelly, Daniel Carter, Six Organs of Admittance, Evan Parker, Sunburned Hand Of Man, Okkyung Lee, Wally Shoup, MV&EE, Keiji Haino, Dredd Foole, Vampire Belt, Joe McPhee, Björk, Carlos Giffoni, Akira Sakata, Christina Carter and Heather Leigh Murray.
"Corsano, despite being arguably the most riotosly energetic and creative drummer in contemporary free jazz, does far more than merely bash his kit into submission. Playing loud does not mean abandoning subtlety, and Corsano's sudden shifts of texture and dynamics are a wonder to behold." - The Wire.

DANIEL HIGGS [USA]
|
With the appearance of a heavily bearded tattooed prophet, Daniel Higgs emerged from the early-80s hardcore punk scene as an underground icon with a near-mythological status. He sharpened his teeth in the music scene as a wild-eyed vocalist in the legendary Baltimore hardcore group REPTILE HOUSE. Brewing a dark psychedelic sound with early-'80s hardcore energy and aesthetics, they earned a solid following and a lasting reputation due to debauchery at their live shows. As the lead singer of the definitive band LUNGFISH, Higgs' stage presence was part Jim Morrison stream-of-consciousness poetry and part G.G. Allin unbridled lunacy. In his shows, he evoked specters of Franz Kafka and Walt Whitman in his lyrics while performing outrageous shenanigans like rolling his eyes back like a madman and trying to pull his own tongue out, or stabbing himself in the forehead with a safety pin while spouting rants about the Antichrist. Some consider his unabashed freakouts nonsensical; others consider them an art form of the purest kind. After ten records with Dischord, Higgs dabbled in conceptual art, formed a side project with his brother called Cone of Light, and created several books of poetry. His first solo album was recorded in 2006 and released on Holy Mountain and combined minimal meditative hillbilly blues, Eastern mysticism, and lyrics about physical and ethereal demise at the hands of demons. The beautifully packaged Atomic Yggdasil Tarot was released by Thrill Jockey in June 2007, and combines a book of his art and poetry with a CD of abstract lo-fi instrumental drones, with intentions of conjuring a tarot-like force when experienced simultaneously.

KINGS OF THE ROAD
Directed by Wim Wenders, Germany, 1976.
KINGS OF THE ROAD [aka IN THE COURSE OF TIME] is a meditation on the passing of the age of great cinema, an acute study of life in post-war Germany and to this day remains one of Wim Wenders' most accomplished films.
In this film we see a Germany which has disappeared, a world which is no longer possible. The story is a simple one... a traveling movie projector repairman travels along the East-German border, visiting worn-out film-theatres. and meets up with a depressed young man whose marriage has just broken up, and the two decide to travel together. Out of such a simple narrative it's amazing what magic can unfold. Brilliant cinema, both heart-breaking and life affirming. In fact, it's both shocking and embarrassing that films like this can no longer be made.

CINEMA DERIVE : JOHN WATERS
|
PINK FLAMINGOS
Directed by John Waters, USA, 1972.
The notorious film that made John Waters infamous [before he became famous with CRY BABY and SERIAL MOM] and which started the whole concept of cultivated bad taste. Extremely black humor concerning an obese transvestite [Divine] and her attempts to keep her status as "the filthiest person in the world". A rival family, the Marbles, are set on stealing this honor away from her. The Marbles own an "adoption clinic" which is actually a black market baby ring.
When it was released it was immediately banned in Australia, Canada, Serbia, and Norway. It was voted number 27 in the "50 films that you must see before you die" festival in London.

FEMALE TROUBLE
Directed by John Waters, USA, 1974.
Waters' personal favorite of his early films, and rightly so. This is John Waters at his zenith, and all of of his original actors are together here for the last time and giving their best performances. Set in the white trash suburbs of Baltimore, transvestite Divine plays Dawn Davenport, the good girl gone bad when she doesn't get the cha-cha shoes she wanted for Christmas. After turning to a life of delinquency, she gets mixed up with some fascist beauty salon owners. This film is about America's sick obsession with stardom, which ends in an apocalyptic fashion show.

LEIMAY
Shige Moriya [live visuals], Ximena Garnica [butoh]
Both New-York artists, also known for organizing the Butoh festival of New-York in the Cave Gallery [Brooklyn] are working for years hand in hand, perfecting their art through their mutual evolutions and creations. Shige Moriya, videast, has developed his very specific style, characterized by a very soft and delicate approach to the light phenomenon, which could even remind on many points the old impressionist way. But combined with the expressivity of the work of Butoh dancer Ximena Garnica, the whole situation turns almost into a painting a la Francis Bacon, which happened to be Hijikatas favorite painter.
THE NYGHTBYRDZ
Pierre Mansire [action lighting], Andy Moor [music], Ema Nik Thomas [movement]
Life is tough for birds in Amsterdam, especially at day. No way to live freely in so much concrete, so much agitation, so much urban noise. But when the dark has come, when everything gets quiet, then start the time, for all strange birds of our kind, for real life. Time for the real flight, the real dance, the real song, the real sound, the real vision. This is the time for all of us nightbirds, Andy Moor and all of the free improvisers, Ema Nik Thomas and all of the free dancers, Pierre Mansire and all of the free action lighters.

THROW AWAY YOUR BOOKS, RALLY IN THE STREETS
Directed by Shugi Terayama, Japan, 1971.
This wild film still divides modern Japanese audiences like hell - it is considered a masterpiece by many [especially the young] but also draws a lot of critical flack, especially from the establishment. It is dreamily composed of wonderfully noisy music, trippy color filters, psycho-sexual imagery and a free-form narrative full of psychedelic surrealism. Its plot is elliptical and loose, and it seems to have been a big influence on Harmony Korine's GUMMO. "A phantasmagoric masterpiece of Rebellion."
This poetic-experimental film is a landmark in cinema, and is so rare here in the West that you might not have another possibility to ever see this one again on the big screen. The soundtrack alone has become legendary in Japan for being far before its time.
