THE BOY WITH THE INCREDIBLE BRAIN
Discovery Channel Documentary, UK, 2005

DECAMARONE
|
|
When the bird flu pandemic hits worldwide and the global economy is destroyed, ten artists flee the chaotic streets of Amsterdam, locking themselves into the old Filmacademie on the Overtoom which they call the Oekolos. Every night, they entertain each other with ten short performances telling stories of love and success and of the evils of the age. But one thing is never mentioned: the intense outside reality of disease, riots, starvation and the bird flu that will probably kill them all. They don't strive for a manifesto or a political message. They speak plainly of their world... one that may be gone forever.
As they enter the building, audiences are welcomed into the alternate reality of the Oekolos. With art installations forming its functional interior, the Oekolos resembles an ecosystem that actively relates the whole space, the performers and the audience to each other. The audience witnesses the performances from within this alternate reality.
Boccaccio's original Decamarone [1351] is a framestory about the plague in medieval Florence. It heralded a new era in Western Europe through its collection of critical and satirical stories told by the independant voices of ten young people who paint a lively and transparent picture of their world. This festival version of the Decamarone, besides giving context to a diverse collection of short performances, sets a stage for contemporary voices to speak.

AMERICAN PIMP
Directed by Albert + Allen Hughes, USA, 1999
American Pimp documents the phenomenon of the black urban pimp. From 70's blaxploitation icon to modern day hustler, a series of pimps are analyzed, interviewed, and dicected. Their histories, habits, and practices are all caught on camera providing rare access to this dangerous, unstable industry. Although charismatic, often sympathetic and with undeniable camera appeal, the pimps featured, known as "Rosebud", "Fillmore Slim" and "Bishop Don Magic Juan", prey on women whose physical and emotional histories, fractured family lives and economic circumstances have made them vulnerable. In exchange for what passes as guidance, education, financial assistance, physical love and even friendship, these men, to quote Rosebud, "steal a bitch's mind."

THE YES MEN
Directed by Dan Ollman, Sarah Price + Chris Smith, USA, 2003
A comedic documentary which follows The Yes Men, a small group of prankster activists, as they gain world-wide notoriety for impersonating the World Trade Organization on television and at business conferences around the world. The film begins when two members of The Yes Men, set up a website that mimics the World Trade Organization's, and it's mistaken for the real thing. They play along with the ruse and soon find themselves invited to important functions as WTO representatives. Delighted to represent the organization they politically oppose, Andy and Mike don thrift-store suits and set out to shock unwitting audiences with darkly comic satire that highlights the worst aspects of global free trade.

Experimental electronic music - drones, electroacoustics + microsound.
DIA.CHRO.NA
Drone ambiences based on live granular sampling with an integrated VJ perforance with multimedia artist MvH.
SWERVE
Matthijs Vincent Kouw explores interrelationships of movement and
stasis. By juxtaposing drones with more dynamic counterelements, slowly
throbbing and enveloping networks of sounds are created, that are as transient
as they are persistent in their presence. For this performance Matthijs will collaborate with video artist Daan de Jonge.
DAN ARMSTRONG
Loop artist Dan Armstrong has been working multitimbral guitar loops,
performances and compositions based on layered delays and harmonics since the
mid 1980's. Recent projects include a series of 4 CDs following experiments
with music driven by visual narrative through a calendar year, collaborations
with various musicians and performing live and in studio as one of the nefarious Vacuum Boys.
EST(H)/ET(H)ICA
Collective of 3 sound artists [Martin Kloos, Lars Zwanepol + Matthijs Vincent
Kouw] and 3 video artists Daan de Jonge, Arlo Laibowitz + Gerald Hemmers] that
attempts to create isomorphisms of sound and vision. Persistent cross-
fertilizations of these realms are established in a live set which will
emphasise improvisation and the intertwining of sight and sound.

HIJACKING CATASTROPHE - 9/11, FEAR + THE SELLING OF AMERICAN EMPIRE
Directed by Jeremy Earp + Sut Jhally, USA, 2004.
The 9/11 terror attacks continue to send shock waves through the American political system. Continuing fears about American vulnerability alternate with images of American military prowess and patriotic bravado in a transformed media landscape charged with emotion and starved for information. The result is that we have had little detailed debate about the radical turn US policy has taken since 9/11.
Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear + the Selling of American Empire examines how a radical fringe of the Republican Party has used the trauma of the 9/11 terror attacks to advance a pre-existing agenda to radically transform American foreign policy while rolling back civil liberties and social programs at home.

THE CRANES ARE FLYING
Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov, USSR, 1957.
The Cranes are Flying answered the ludicrously romanticised views of war propagated by socialist realism with a healthy dose of expressive realism and inaugurated a wave of refreshingly "grim" anti-war Russian films. The Cranes tells a simple story of budding love shattered by war. Two young lovers, Veronika and Boris, become separated when Boris volunteers for war duty. Lonely and emotionally fragile, Veronika is unable to wait out the war. Boris step-brother Mark, a vain pianist who attained a war exemption on the black market, senses her weakness and takes advantage of her. An implied rape scene is set during an air raid, with the objective onslaught of war used as an expressionistic barometer of Veronikas inner state of mind. Kalatazov pulls out all the stops with chiaroscuro lighting, canted, low angles of Marks crazed face, and a frenzied sound mix of air raid sirens and a piano concerto.
