ANOTHER NICE MESS

MALORIX
Living in the multi-cultural port of Rotterdam, the street sound clashes from open windows and pimped-up cars seem to float directly into Malorix' laptop. Fragments of rai, gabber, bling-bling raps, drum 'n bass, banghra, grime and traditional tunes are chopped and mixed Malorix style to create tracks which are jumpy, freaky, groovy, weird and refreshing.
DJ MARCELLE
Sometimes called "the female John Peel" for her original and varied live sets and weekly radio shows, Dutch woman Marcelle van Hoof plays an eclectic selection of weird electronica, techno, dubstep, minimal, drum+bass, riot grrls, ragga, grime, leftfield hiphop, clickhouse, breakcore, heavy dubs et cetera. She knows no boundaries! Every Tuesday between 19 and 22 hours CET Marcelle hosts an internet radio show on DFM, "Another Nice Mess", which attracts listeners from all over the world. Marcelle is also a wicked live deejay, playing her sets across stages in Europe.

DE BATTRE MON COEUR S'EST ARRETE
Directed by Jacques Audard, France, 2006.
This film is rare in the history of modern cinema, a French remake of an American film rather than the other way around! Yes, this is the French version of the cult classic FINGERS, and instead of starring Harvey Keitel it stars the brilliant Romain Duris in the lead role. Where the original FINGERS is rough and harsh, this film has an incredible elegance and beauty. When this film was released it was barely screened before it was quickly brushed away by the Hollywood blockbusters, but it is a fascinating gem which is quiet and innovative...and its interesting to see how creatively different this French film is to the American original. Duris plays Tom, a hoodlum who works the more criminal side of real estate - evicting poor families from slums, roughing people up, and making dirty deals in the middle of the night. Tom obviously hates everything about his life, which is compounded by his love of classical music, but he doesn't see any way to free himself, especially as the situation gets darker and more complicated. A brilliant film with outstanding performances that deserves much more attention then it was given.

FINGERS
Directed by James Toback, USA, 1978.
The original FINGERS. This film has become a cult classic since it was made, and although is has very rarely ever been shown, it seems to be one of the films that Harvey Keitel made that ruined his acting career for the next decade throughout the 80s. Keitel plays the son of a mob-boss who roughs people up to collect debts for dad, but he is torn between this world of brutality and his love and desire to play classical music. This results in an "emotional roller coaster" with bursts of sexual brutality as he is torn between two incompatible realities. Harsh and visceral in a way that films only from the 70s could be, this boasts a virtuoso acting performance by Keitel along with a brilliant cast including Tony Sirico and Dominic Chianese from The Sopranos.

M-JO
THE NEW EARTH GROUP

PHILIP GUSTON : A LIFE LIVED
Directed by Michael Blackwood, USA, 1980.
Late in life, the artist looks back over a career that originated in social realism during the 30s, moved to the center of Abstract Expressionism, and culminated in his last, productive work with figures and imagined objects. Filmed at the retrospective in San Francisco in 1980 and at his Woodstock studio, where Guston is seen painting, the artist speaks candidly about his philosophy of painting and the psychological motivation for his work.

CHARLES MINGUS : TRIUMPH OF THE UNDERDOG
Directed by Don McGlynn, USA, 1998.
Charles Mingus, one of the most creative forces in American 20th Century music, is examined in depth through archive footage and interviews with two former wives and numerous former bandmates. The music of Charles Mingus goes beyond simple categorization. Schooled in classical music, with his early professional exposure in the Los Angeles swing scene, Mingus moved through numerous styles, working with major innovaters, such as Bud Powell, Charles Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, + Eric Dolphy. A volatile personality, his gentle and extreme sides are both in view.

WOMAN IN THE DUNES
Directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara, Japan, 1964.
Lots of sand, surrealism, and sensuality in this classic art-house hit from Japan.
A haunting tale of an entomologist who is out in the wastelands near a small village doing research, and who finds himself trapped in a deep sand-hole with an outcast village woman. Ever been in a situation where you were trapped into something that you hated, but which you began to accept and it turned out to be your salvation? This film reaches almost into mythical dimensions, echoing in the soul of the viewer in a way that no other film in the history of cinema has ever achieved. With images and sequences that are unforgettably evocative, WOMAN IN THE DUNES remains a truly extraordinary work of cinematic art and is without parallel. This the uncensored directors cut of the film.

WHO'S THAT SINGING OVER THERE
Directed by Slobodan Sijan, Serbia, 1980.
On April 5, 1941, a date Serbs will recognize, men on
a country road board Krstic's bus for Belgrade: two
Gypsies who occasionally sing about misery, an aging
war vet, a Nazi sympathizer, a dapper singer, a
consumptive, and a man with a shotgun. Krstic is a
world-weary cynic, out for a buck; the driver is his
son, the simple, cheerful Misko. En route they pick up
a priest and young newlyweds going to the seaside.
Along the way, mis-adventure strikes: a flat tire, a
rickety bridge, a farmer who's plowed the road, a
funeral, two feuding families, an army detail, and a
lost wallet slow the bus and expose rifts among the
travelers. On April 6, amid rumors of war, they reach
Belgrade..
