KEN VANDERMARK + PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE
|
Free improvised music of the highest energy and quality!
KEN VANDERMARK - saxophones + clarinets
PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE - drums + percussion
Chicago's Ken Vandermark stretches the possibilities of his saxophones and clarinet in a continuous flow of tones and timbres, whilst Stavanger-based drummer Nilssen-Love has the reputation of being avant-jazz's most powerful mallet and stick wizard. Vandermark and Nilssen-Love use free improvisation as a means to explore all levels of dynamics, density, rhythm, timbre, form and tonality. The results of their work are experienced as intense, exhilarating, and boundary breaking. This is raw music, with a brutal beauty, which becomes more and more exhilarating the more you let the music take control of body and mind and set aside the normal understanding of nice and ugly.

HACKING EXPOSED : CRACKING THE SYSTEM
|
THE SECRET HISTORY OF HACKING
Channel 4 documentary, UK, 2001.
A hacker is a brilliantly devious criminal mind breaking the world's most secret IT systems for money or political espionage, if you believe hysterical press reports. In fact, the truth is a lot more intriguing. THE SECRET HISTORY OF HACKING uncovers the real story of a counter culture that has corporate America on the run. A strong undercurrent of mischievous daring runs through the hackers' ethos. Since the sixties, hackers have been breaking into much of the globe's state-of-the-art electronic systems involving government, military institutions, businesses and individuals. The code was always "look but don't touch". But now, as the world becomes ever more entwined with the internet, some hackers are becoming more sinister, spreading damaging computer viruses and capitalising on access to personal files and millions of bank accounts.

PRIMER
Directed by Shane Carrruth, USA, 2004.
PRIMER is set in the industrial park/suburban tract-home fringes of an unnamed contemporary city where two young engineers, Abe and Aaron, are members of a small group of men who work by day for a large corporation while conducting extracurricular experiments on their own time in a garage. While tweaking their current project, a device that reduces the apparent mass of any object placed inside it by blocking gravitational pull, they accidentally discover that it has some highly unexpected capabilities, ones that could enable them to do and to have seemingly anything they want. Taking advantage of this unique opportunity is the first challenge they face. Dealing with the consequences is the next.

MANUFACTURING CONSENT: NOAM CHOMSKY AND THE MEDIA
Directed by Mark Achbar + Peter Wintonick, Canada, 1992.
|
In an energetic fusion of images and ideas, MANUFACTURING CONSENT explores the political life and times of the controversial author, linguist and radical philosopher, Noam Chomsky. Highlighting Chomsky's analysis of the media, MANUFACTURING CONSENT focuses on democratic societies where populations not disciplined by force are subjected to more subtle forms of ideological control. Shocking examples of media deception permeate Chomsky's critique of the forces at work behind the daily news. Chomsky encourages his listeners to extricate themselves from this "web of deceit" by undertaking a course in "intellectual self-defense." Travelling with him through Canada, Japan, Europe and across the U.S.A., we witness a tireless activist challenging and being confronted by the public and the press.

GUY MADDIN NIGHT
|
Welcome to the fevered imagination of Guy Maddin, the Canadian experimental filmmaker who claims David Lynch's "Eraserhead" is his biography. Suffering from a rare neurological condition, that makes him feel as though he's constantly being touched, a daily dose of ketamine helps him to ease his pain. Whatever his inspirations, Maddin's addiction to melodrama and silent-movie conventions have produced some of the most startlingly original and subversively intelligent films of the last 15 years, including "Twilight of the Ice Nymphs" and "Dracula: Pages from a Virgins Diary." Like its predecessors, tonight's main feature, "The Saddest Music in the World" glows with Maddins signature visual style, his vaudevillian humor and gleeful bad taste. The overall effect is hallucinatory and even alien, like a broadcast from a distant star.
THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD
Directed by Guy Madddin, Canada, 2004.
In 1933, during the Great American Depression, the small Canadian town Winnipeg is chosen by the London Times, for the fourth time in a row, as "the world capital of sorrow". The legless baroness of beer industry, Lady Helen Port-Huntley [Isabella Rossellini], promotes a contest to choose the saddest music in the world and find where the real drinkers are in the hope to promote sales of her beer. Musicians from around the world descend on the city to try and win first place - a $25,000 prize awarded in "Depression Era dollars". Guy Maddin has devised a style that evokes old films from an alternate timeline; "The Saddest Music" is not silent and not entirely in black and white, but it looks like a long-lost classic from decades ago, grainy and sometimes faded; he shoots on 8mm film and video and blows it up to look like a memory from cinema's distant past.
Tonight's programme also includes two of Maddin's short films; SISSY BOY SLAP PARTY [1995] and THE HEART OF THE WORLD [2000].

LA RICOTTA
Directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Italy, 1963.
A short film [35min] which was part of Pasolini's omnibus film RoGoPaG. It is often considered the most memorable portion of RoGoPaG and the height of Pasolini's creative powers and social criticism. The film deals with the film production of the Passion of Jesus with a director acting like Pasolini yet played by Orson Welles. The most biting social critique is shown through the main character of Stracci [meaning rags]. Stracci is a poor and starving man who works as an extra [ironically, the "good thief"] who is not given pity or mercy. Stracci tries everything to get something to eat and he finally does. Unfortunately, he dies on the cross due to indigestion from eating ricotta cheese.

JONAH WHO WILL BE 25 IN THE YEAR 2000
Directed by Alain Tanner, Switzerland, 1976.
Through circumstance, coincidence and necessity, eight characters find themselves drawn together. In various ways they're all irrevocably marked by the spirit of May '68, individually representative of the diverse political utopianism operating in the annus mirabilis of which Mailer wrote, "One had the thought that the gods were back in human affairs". Tanner gives us a Trotskyist journalist, an anarchic shopgirl who steals food, a transcendental mysticist, an educationalist and a labourer who accommodates his friends' philosophies but realises that their enduringly optimistic visions can only be achieved through class struggle.

WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR?
Directed by Chris Paine, USA, 2006.
It was among the fastest, most efficient production cars ever built. It ran on electricity, produced no emissions and catapulted American technology to the forefront of the automotive industry. The lucky few who drove it never wanted to give it up. So why did General Motors crush its fleet of EV1 electric vehicles in the Arizona desert? WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR? chronicles the life and mysterious death of the GM EV1, examining its cultural and economic ripple effects and how they reverberated through the halls of government and big business.
