Ken Okami - sound + light
Makiko Ito, Sylvain Meret + Kenzo Kusada - dance

uses light bulbs as instruments by amplifiying

atomosphere with lots of light and shadow.
The dancers also have small microphones on their bodies, so sounds

BARAKA

LATCHO DROM
Directed by Tony Gatlif, Algeria, 1993.
Latcho Drom [Romany for "safe journey"] describes the travels, singing and dancing of Romany groups from Rajahstan [India], Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, France, and Spain. Some scenes are acted, but there is no dialogue or narration, only partial translation of some songs. The film illustrates the variety of conditions in which the Romany people live; earthbound nomads in the hot deserts of Asia, ironsmiths and abjectly poor tree-dwellers in the frozen plains of Eastern Europe, and craftspeople and traders in the hills and seasides of north Africa and western Europe. It also illustrates the similarities in travel habits, musical tones [spoons, open drums, and string-based rhythms] and song themes [celebration of travel and perceived rejection by sedentary locals].

THE CITY OF PHOTOGRAPHERS
Directed by Sebastian Moreno, Chile, 2006
During the reign of dictator Pinochet, a resistance movement of photographers arose in Santiago, the capital of Chile. They showed what wasn't allowed to be shown. By doing this, they raised awareness of all the things that happened during the dictatorship. The father of filmmaker Sebastian Moreno, was one of them. His son made this fascinating film about the people for whom photography symbolized courage, solidarity and freedom.

JOE MCPHEE / FRED LONBERG-HOLM / MICHAEL ZERANG
|
Joe McPhee - pocket trumpet + tenor sax
Fred Lonberg-Holm - cello
Michael Zerang - drums.
Joe McPhee is one of the most consistently impressive and adventurous composer/instrumentalists in jazz. His magical take on avant-garde sax remains one of the wonders of the scene. He still has one of the most beautiful tones on the planet, even when he's reaching for jazz's outer limits.

SPROCKET SOUNDS
|
A 8mm/16mm celluloid evening of short films, all more or less connected to the subject of WAR. "Old wars", that is! Newsreels from WWII, strange footage never shown in public cinema before. In B/W and some in color, some with sound, some with added music. On original copies, with our four projectors, it will give you an incredible experience. First of all because of the stunning images, secondly because it's an amazing universal continuing story that confronts you and makes you think.

DJ /RUPTURE + ANDY MOOR
DJ /rupture's triple-turntable experiments explore the common ground of dub, hip hop, breakbeat, dancehall, and Middle Eastern folk music. The resulting musical stews illuminate revelatory links between the dispersed musical genres of insurgent cultures, unified under the banner of the breakbeat. For the past 2 years, /rupture and guitarist Andy Moor have been playing completely improvised duo sets, with a collaborative album slated for 2007 release. Their dynamic interactions range from moments of delicate avant-garde soundwork to futuristic beats intersected by angular guitar.

ADAM AND PAUL
Directed by Leonard Abrahamson, Ireland, 2005.
Two junkies, Adam and Paul, wake up to find themselves on a field a short walk away from a grim housing estate. How they got there is one question they can't answer, nor can they explain the events which led to Adam becoming superglued to the stale mattress he slept on. But this is the least of their problems as they begin their quest to score, a quest which takes in meetings with friends and foes both old and new. Set in the world of the homeless and drug-addicted dregs of Dublin, Adam and Paul is an uncompromisingly bleak drama with an injection of black humour running throughout.

VIER DE WERELD : MIRACLE OF LIFE
THE SECRET
The Secret uses a documentary format to present its "transforming" message, the "Law of Attraction". This law is the secret that, according to the tagline, "has travelled through centuries to reach you". The film features interviews of professionals in the business of promoting, teaching, or writing about the concept of the "Law of Attraction". Interspersed among the interviews are testimonials, real-life stories, and quotes from historical figures. As put forth in the film, the "Law of Attraction" principle posits that our feelings and thoughts affect real events in the world, from the workings of the entire cosmos to interactions among individuals in their physical, emotional, and professional affairs. The film also suggests that there has been a conspiracy to keep this central principle hidden from the public.

NIGHT OF THE MODERN CLASSIC
Two Takes on Victimization
|
FUNNY GAMES
Directed by Michael Hanneke, Austria, 1997.
One of the most powerful and controversial movies of the late nineties. Haneke [La Pianiste, Cache] shows us what it's like to really identify yourself with good guys who are being terrorized by the bad guys. In this case a happy Austrian family gets a visit from two very unfriendly young boys in their summerhouse by the lake.

|
FOR YOUR HEIGHT ONLY
Directed by Eddie Nicart, USA, 1979.
An undisputed cult classic from 1979, and one of the most funny spoofs ever made. Our superhero is Weng Weng, at 83 cm. tall, the shortest actor ever to have a leading role. With his bravery [and a pair of X-Ray glasses] he's the most remarkable good guy you'll ever see, so beware of this Phillipinan midget madness! This quote from one of the bad guys really says it all: "The forces of good are our sworn enemy... they must be exterminated, and I mean lethally!"

DRIFT
|
How can we engage ourselves with the world we live in? "Drift" ["urge"] is a philosophical festival that in many different ways tries to answer this question. Philosophy as a discipline has gotten out of its study, but can we honestly say that it is now part of the world we live in? Now that it has come down from the mountain, is its critical power still as great as it was when it was up high in the clouds? Drift claims philosophical thinking can in fact expose our accepted views and show us where we've thought wrong. Drift claims that we really need to work things through and that we should critically engage ourselves pitbull-wise with the world as we know it or as we can imagine it to be.
