DEALING AND WHEELING IN SMALL ARMS
Directed by Sander Francken, Netherlands, 2006.
A political documentary on the uncontrolled widespread of small arms, which rule and ruin the lives of a growing number of people in developing countries. the film shows how people relate in various ways to arms; arms cherished as collectors-item, small arms shot with passion and for a "feel of power", arms as state-of-the-art design, arms as lucrative trade-off, but also small arms destroying possessions and livelyhoods, disrupting families and killing loved ones. Small arms are part of our culture, passion, power and manliness, but are destroying our human condition.

After the film there will be a debate with the filmmaker and a campaigner from Stop De Wapenhandel.

KINETIC ENGINEERING #4
experimental electronic music - drones, electroacoustics, microsound.
|
BJERGA/IVERSEN
Norwegian duo exploring the grey areas or "ghost sounds" of the experimental drone. Largely based on improvisation the duo has been exploring dense but somehow calm fields of sound both live and in the studio.
RADBOUD MENS + MATTHIJS VINCENT KOUW
Microsound, clicks 'n cuts, and noise are intertwined in rhythmic and non-rhythmic pieces, which vary from soundscapes that use microscopic particles to drones and minimal techno.
MICHAEL BEIJER
A performance of "In Said City", an illustrated book accompanied by a soundtrack that consists of drones, noise, a cheap Casio keyboard and high frequency experiments.
SPURIOUS
Collective of sound and video artists that attempts to create isomorphisms of sound and vision. Persistent cross- fertilizations of these realms are established in a live set which will emphasise improvisation and the intertwining of sight and sound.

THE TENANT
Directed by Roman Polanski, France, 1976
|
THE TENANT presents us with an incredibly nihilistic vision. Polanski documents a breakdown in modern communication, where the limits of privacy and identity no longer hold discreet shape. He presents this within a cold and distant France, but it may as well be anywhere. He centers it all within a residential building, where everyone lives together, yet couldn't be further apart. In our advanced stage of industrialization, what symbol better represents a microcosm of both society and impersonality than an apartment? The vision may be dark, but the film is intensely personal, as Polanski's best films tend to be.

CINEMA DERIVE : CHARLES BUKOWSKI
|
CRAZY LOVE
Directed by Dominique Deruddere, Belgium, 1987.
Based loosely on tales from Bukowski's LOVE IS A DOG FROM HELL, CRAZY LOVE examines three pivotal nights over the course of twenty years in the life of hapless antihero Harry Voss, as he learns firsthand about love and defeat. First, as a child, he develops an unrealistically romantic view of love based on fairy tales. Next, as an acne-scarred teenager, he must find a way to get closer to the girl of his dreams. Finally, as an alcoholic adult, he finds that there is always a way to find some female companionship--even if it means crossing the boundaries of what is socially acceptable. Though often grotesque and guaranteed to offend sensitive viewers, this critically-acclaimed production contains a unique and winning blend of pathos and black comedy.

THE BUKOWSKI TAPES [excerpts]
Directed by Barbet Schroeder, France, 1987.
The Charles Bukowski Tapes are an altogether more than four hours long collection of 52 short-interviews with the US-American cult author Charles Bukowski, sorted by topic and each between one and ten minutes long. Director Barbet Schroeder interviews Bukowski about such themes as alcohol, violence, and women, and Bukowski answers willingly, losing himself in sometimes minute-long monologues. Amongst other things, Bukowski leads the small camera team through his parentss house and his former neighbourhood, but the largest part of the interviews takes place in Bukowski's flat or backyard. The probably best-known scene of the documentary shows Bukowski getting violent against his wife Linda Lee.

CLOUDLAND CANYON
A transatlantic duo consisiting of KIP UHLHORN [Brooklyn, NY] and SIMON WOJAN [Hamburg, Germany]. In 2006 New York label Tee Pee Records released their debut abum "Requiems der Natur". A far out krautrock vibe, some classic long-lost, extra-damaged super freaked out 60s or 70s psychedelia, but filtered through modern technology. It's almost as if some supercomputer a million years in the future began picking up these strange transmissions from the old Earth, German Oak, Faust, Amon Duul, but after traveling billions of miles and being interpreted by some alien machinery, those songs and sounds come out sounding, well, completely fucking nuts!!! It's like some sort of laptopped Dead C / Ash Ra mash up. Rich clouds of metallic shimmer surround looped guitars, creepy chanted vocals are submerged in demented spacey FX, dense deconstructed pop songs emerge from the chaos, rife with swirling vocals, and layer after layer of drone and processed harmonies.

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V FOR VENDETTA tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked man known only as "V". Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about Vs mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plan to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

UMATIC NIGHT
|
A night of extreme field recordings, analog improv, digital noise, live video and microsonic drones.
IMPROVISATION FOR FIELD RECORDINGS AND ANALOG SYNTHESIZER
Rob Curgenven - field recordings + prerecorded piano
Derek Holzer - analog synthesizer + pure data
Sara Kolster - live film, video + objects
Holzer and Curgenven both draw upon their diverse backgrounds in field
recording, sound art, modern composition, noise and experimental music
to create this live sonic environment. Their improvisations focus on the
interrelation of Curgenven's detailed recordings from the Australian
Outback and a selection of prerecorded piano resonances juxtaposed with
Holzer's slowly modulated, shimmering and crackling synthesizer tones.
Sara Kolster's live manipulations of film, video and found objects adds
a warm visual element to the set.
468
Christian Toonk - audio feedback system
Bas van Koolwijk - digital audio/video interference
Continuation of the RGB project of Christian Toonk and Bas van Koolwijk.
This time it's not the PAL video signal that serves as a basis, but the
ITU-R 468-weighting curve, which is used when measuring noise in audio
systems. This collaborative project explores noise, with an emphasis on
detail. Long stretched harmonies of total distortion. Quiet with the
occasional burst.
SWERVE
Matthijs Vincent Kouw - kinetic engineering
An exploration of the relation between movement and stasis by
juxtaposing drones with more dynamic counter-elements - a process that
may be called "kinetic engineering". This entails the creation of slowly
throbbing and enveloping meshworks of sounds, which converge and
disperse. A mix of drones and microsound intertwines deep slabs of sound
with subtle movements, and thus attempts to create an immersive effect.
