She develops a crush on the garbage truck driver
Krassky, although her sleazy boss Boris warns her that
he's gay. Maybe because of her boyish looks, Krassky
likes her too. Both don't notice the growing jealousy

THE WAR GAME
Directed by Peter Watkins, UK, 1965.
Sometimes, documentaries can still exercise dramatic license. This winner of the 1967 Oscar for Best Documentary is an exploration of what would happen to the English countryside in the event of a nuclear attack. The producers used interviews and docudrama to argue that Britain's Civil Defense was ill-equipped for the potential ravages of the Cold War. While speculative and shot on a low budget, this exploration of the worst-case scenario is graphic and convincing. Produced by the BBC for television in Britain, the film was deemed so frightening that it was given a theatrical release instead.
The War Game is the cinematic equivalent of a blow to the solar plexus. Filmed in hand-held documentary fashion, the film speculates on the aftereffects of a nuclear war. Some of the images are almost impossible to look at; they truly illustrate the theory that, in the wake of such a holocaust, the living will envy the dead. The most heartwrenching scene is the simplest. Asked what he wants to be when he grows up, a sullen young boy, physically unhurt but with obviously deep emotional scarred, mutters "I don't want to be nothin'".

CULLODEN
Directed by Peter Watkins, UK, 1964.
A detailed study of the 1746 Battle of Culloden and the ensuing brutal
suppression of the Highland Scots, Culloden drew much of its analysis
and voice-over narration from the history book of the same name by John
Prebble, who was credited as historical adviser. Culloden's early
section introduced the audience to the battle's famous leaders and
forgotten victims alike, documenting the failures of the Highlanders'
leadership and poor preparation, before graphically dramatising the
battle itself.
This was the 1960s, and the US army was "pacifying"
the Vietnam highlands. I wanted to draw a parallel between these events
and what had happened in our own UK Highlands two centuries earlier,
including because our knowledge of what took place after Culloden was
basically limited to an exotic image of Bonnie Prince Charlie on the
label of a Drambuie whiskey bottle. Secondly, I wanted to break through
the conventional use of professional actors in historical melodramas,
with the comfortable avoidance of reality that these provide, and to
use amateurs - ordinary people - in a reconstruction of their own
history. Many of the people portraying the Highland army in our film
were direct descendants of those who had been killed on Culloden
Moor. Peter Watkins

Sound Piece/ Concert: Burgundy Milkshake
BASF Recall - A sound collage using found material, found solely on BASF cassettes. In the spirit of recalling the spirit of a companys collective history, BASF Recall attempts to heal the wounds inflicted when a stolen patent resulted in world dominance of synthetic pigment production. More info at www.jamesbeckett.tk under the tab BASF.
Fridge - A drone piece using live and pre-recorded workplace refrigerators as source material.
Exhibition: Society for the Preservation of Trace
The concerts/ sound pieces will be accompanied by a poster/book-cover exhibition from the collection of The Society for the Preservation of Trace. As an institute, they are concerned with the remarkable disappearance of traditional ritual in the urban environment and [in light of city dress-sense] pollution of ethnic form in hybrids of modernity. In addition, the collection strives to outline the distaste with which a "progressive" industrialized world has come to allow its sole contributors to fall by the wayside. On this special occasion of potential voodoo, the committee of the SPT has selected the following works...
Sketchy - Dutch chocolate-box romance novels featuring eyebrows darker than what one would normally expect of a Dutch woman.
Hailing from Nigeria - a series of public service announcements regarding religious and sexual practices.
DJs Morsanek and Hiljef will spin appropriately spiritual sounds.

PUNISHMENT PARK
Directed by Peter Watkins, UK, 1971.
This rarely seen film by maverick director Peter Watkins [better known for THE WAR GAME and CULLODEN] employs his favoured quasi-documentary style to depict an ultra-conservative America bent on rounding up dissidents and subjecting them to gruelling tribunals that end either in imprisonment or a three-day ordeal in the desert known as Punishment Park.
With the Vietnam war spiralling out of control and increasingly unpopular with the American public, President Nixon declares a state of national emergency and Federal authorities are given the power to detain persons judged to be a risk to national security. In a desert region in California, a civilian tribunal passes penal sentences on groups of dissidents but offers the alternative of 3 days in Punishment Park. Watkins film vividly imagines a world where political dissidents are hunted down by the forces of law and order in a deadly game of cat and mouse.
As relevant today as when initially released, Punishment Park is a stunningly visual political film with strong elements of thriller. In light of Guantanamo Bay, the Patriot Act and the recent polarisation of political viewpoints in the US, the film represents a hauntingly resonant vision for the contemporary viewer. It is a savage indictment of American political consciousness from one of the most underrated of British filmmakers.
