DAEVID ALLEN
Poetry reading
Daevid Allen's career began in the late 50's in Paris experimenting with tape loops with Terry Riley and doing music for performance works with William Burroughs. The early 60's found him in England working with teenaged Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, Kevin Ayers and Hugh Hopper, which eventually became Soft Machine. Along with Pink Floyd they were the most influential bands in the UK Psychedelic scene of 1966-67, and Jimi Hendrix's favourite band. Daevid left Soft Machine late in1967 and relocated to Paris where he eventually formed Gong, who are regarded by many as the greatest psychedelic band ever and were the first band signed to Virgin Records after Mike Oldfield.

CLEO DE 5 A 7
Directed by Agnes Varda, France, 1961.
Varda confronts themes of existentialism, mortality, despair, and what is meaningful in life. This film follows two hours [in almost real-time] in the life of a young pop singer as she waits to obtain biopsy results from her doctor at 7 o'clock. Before her doctor's appointment, Cléo meets with several friends and strangers in 1960s Paris, while at the same time contemplating her mortality.

LE BONHEUR
Directed by Agnes Varda, France, 1965.
"Le Bonheur", filmed in a vivid primary colors, features a married couple, Francois and Therese, who experience both bliss and utter sadness within the film's time frame. This film which is deceptively simple and outrageously easy to watch, carries a wonderful side-effect, it makes us profoundly re-think what happiness is. There is not a philosophical word spoken in the film, but when the film is finished we are left with a deeply philosophical question to reflect upon.

THE SUBHOLY MODAL ROUNDERS
|
Peter Stampfel - banjo + vocals
Lukas Simonis - guitar
Nina Hitz - cello, harp + keyboards
Alan Purves - percussion + squeaky toys
Peter Stampfel started his group THE HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS in the
early 60s together with fellow-weirdo Steve Weber. Their
concept was to play folk music and use lots of drugs. Those were the
days of the "Great Folk Scare" when everything was taken deadly
serious, especially the folk music which was still considered to be
"protest" music and "uncommercial". They had their brief
moment of fame when their "Bird Song" was used in Dennis Hopper's EASY
RIDER movie. Stampfel and Weber also played in the NY
group the FUGS for a while and made a few legendary albums such as "The
Moray Eels Eat The Holy Modal Rounders" and "Have Moicy". They kept
making their weirdo folk on and off for the next 30-odd years, meanwhile
Stampfel did other projects including a collaboration with
Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas, called The Dutels. Recently a
documentary film, "The Holy Modal Rounders: Bound to Lose", was released, which Stampfel was invited to present at WORM in Rotterdam. After
playing there with local musicians - Lukas Simonis, Nina Hitz and
Alan Purves, he expressed his wish to continue this collaboration. So
now the group are on tour in the Netherlands while recording their new
album.

ANDREI RUBLEV
Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, Russia, 1966.
Tarkovsky's masterpiece about the great 15th century Russian icon painter is a complex and demanding narrative about the responsibility of the artist to participate in history rather than documenting it from a safe distance. A landmark in Russian cinema, Andrei Rublev is a beautifully lyrical film about harmony and soulful expression.

THE PROMISED LAND
Directed by Tanvir Mokammel, Bangladesh, 1961.
A story of six decades, three countries and statelessness, about the urdu-speaking community of Bangladesh. The terms "urdu-speakers" and the more loaded "biharis" are used to refer to muslim people who originally emigrated from India to the newly created East Pakistan in 1947 and afterwards.
Many of them, but by no means all, originated from the state of Bihar and were fleeing large scale communal massacres. Three decades later, during the struggle for independence in Bangladesh in 1971, this community became embroiled in conflict. Isolated as collaborators against Bangladeshi independence, this moment was a defining one for the urdu-speakers and has had a devastating legacy. This is a story about the 160,000 people from this community who live isolated in 116 "camps" or "settlements" in Bangladesh.

GARMENT GIRLS OF BANGLADESH
Directed by Tanvir Mokammel, Bangladesh, 1965.
A common sight in the streets of Dhaka is the parade of young women and girls going to and from work in garment factories. These girls, who number about 2 million, work in the most successful manufacturing industry that Bangladesh has. Their labour brings in the biggest proportion of trade income. On their toil rests the livelihoods of millions of others. Their importance to the Bangladesh economy is incalculable, but the garment industry is faced with uncertainties and difficulties. Most pressing are issues concerning wages and safe working conditions, future investment and the international trade environment. Symptomatic of these problems have been the long succession of factory catastrophes, and the widespread worker disturbances of May and June 2006. How will the various stakeholders, including the state, the foreign buyers and the successful entrepreneurs, respond to the challenges ahead? Will the industry lose its "sweatshop" image?
