19:00 GATE OF FLESH
Directed by Seijun Suzuki, Japan, 1964.
Set in Tokyo just after the war, the film tells of a gang of prostitutes who live and work in a bombed-out building. Under the leadership of the tattood Komasa Sen, they exact a fearsome revenge on any women who break their code of no sex for free. When Shintaro, a handsome ex-soldier now on the run, enters their enclosed female world, it`s only time before a terrible tragedy ensues. Now recognised as a classic of Japanese cinema, the film is a shocking, sometimes brutal but always compelling experience.
21:00 CHUNGKING EXPRESS
Directed by Wong Kar Wai, Hong Kong, 1994.
Two stories, two lovelorn cops, two objects of desire: one a big-time heroin dealer in deep trouble with her bosses after the cargo disappears, the other a seriously flaky bartender who inadvertently gets hold of the keys to her admirer's apartment, all shot in a breathless kaleidoscope of colour and hand-held camerawork to create a mesmerising portrait of Hong Kong in the 1990s.
23:00 ZATOICHI
Directed by Takeshi Kitano, Japan, 2003.
Zatoichi is a 19th century blind nomad making his living as a gambler and masseur. However, behind this humble facade, he is a master swordsman gifted with a lightning-fast draw and breathtaking precision. While wandering, Zatoichi discovers a remote mountain village at the mercy of Ginzo, a ruthless gang-leader. Ginzo disposes of anyone who gets in his way, especially after hiring the mighty samurai ronin, Hattori, as a bodyguard. After a raucous night of gambling in town, Zatoichi encoutners a pair of geishas - as dangerous as they are beautiful - who've come to avenge their parents' murder. As the paths of these and other colorful characters intertwine, Ginzo's henchmen are soon after Zatoichi. With his legendary cane sword at his side, the stage is set for a riveting showdown.

CONFLICT CINEMA #1

PATHS OF GLORY
Directed by Stanley Kubrick, USA. 1957.
Based upon the controversial, semi-fictional 1935 novel of the same name by Humphrey Cobb, this masterful, unsentimental, classic anti-war film, set in World War 1, emphasizes the wide, hierarchical gap between those who take orders and fight the wars in muddy trenches, and those that give the orders and are isolated from the real ravages of war. Three blameless, subordinate soldiers are victimized, given hopeless "paths of glory", and condemned to die to cover up the wrong-headed actions of their ruthless and opportunistic superiors.
"Paths Of Glory" was the first of Kubrick's anti-war trilogy, continuing with "Dr, Strangelove" [1964] and "Full Metal Jacket" [1987].

THE HAUNTING
Directed by Robert Wise, USA, 1963.
|
|
It's what we don't see in "The Haunting" that makes it scary. It's the
atmosphere of the place and its effect on the people in it. And it's
the sounds and the lighting and particularly the shadows. There is one
scene, for instance, where Eleanor and Theodora are terrified and
clasping hands in the dark whilst weird images and strange noises
surround them, and then.... The fright comes, believe it or not, when
it's over, and Eleanor asks, "Whose hand was I holding?" Then you feel
the cold chills down your spine.
"The Haunting" is presented as a part of Public Space With A Roof's "Intervening The Urban Void" project and is introduced by Manutau with a short cinema-performance.
