Svankmajer is a master animator whose films explore the dark labyrinths of the imagination. He specializes in taking everyday objects [a pocket knife, clay, stones or a porcelain doll] and transforming them into his own dreamlike universe. The "New Yorker" called him "the last great obsessive in cinema."
On this special night we will be screening a few of his rarely shown short masterpieces, along with his latest feature film.
LUNACY
Directed by Jan Svankmajer, Czech, 2006
Set in mid-19th Century France, a young man named Jean Berlot gets caught up in a nightmarish world of decadence, orgiastic black masses and an absurd insane asylum. Described by Svankmajer as a "philosophical horror film" it is loosely based on the short stories of Edgar Allen Poe and influenced by the writings of the Marquis de Sade.

Internationally recognized as probably the worst film ever made, "Plan 9" contradicts the very purpose of filmmaking to be engaging or altogether entertaining. Most science fiction films aim to employ a singular theme. Plan 9 instead opts to tackle every theme popular in 50s. Grave robbery, UFOs, monsters, and a mad scientist, Wood doesnt merely employ clichs, he embraces them: no scientist can be too mad and no zombie too thirsty for human blood. Despite the botched execution of the film, Wood's ambition can be seen. It was clearly his attempt to meld elements of science fiction, horror, drama, suspense, and to a minor degree, politics. Plan 9 fails on every account. Curiously, watching his opus secede from any level of believability is a well spent eighty minutes as every frame is charged with humor.

This film focuses on ex-Foreign Legion officer, Galoup, as he recalls his once glorious life, leading troops in the Gulf of Djibouti. His existence there was happy, strict and regimented, but the arrival of a promising young recruit, Sentain, plants the seeds of jealousy in Galoup's mind. He feels compelled to stop him from coming to the attention of the commandant who he admires, but who ignores him. Ultimately, his jealousy leads to the destruction of both Sentain and himself.

A fictional, worst-case-scenario docu-drama about
nuclear war and its aftermath in and around a typical English city. It was
intended as an hour-long program to air on BBC 1, but it was deemed too
intense and violent to broadcast and was banned. The official reason
was for violence and the depiction of human suffering, but others hinted
that it may have been because it went against the official government
line concerning the survivability of a nuclear attack. Low-budget and shot on
location, it strives for and achieves convincing and unflinching realism.

Set in the near future, countries engage in televised gladiatorial bouts known as the Peace Games. East and West have stopped maintaining standing armies and nuclear weapons. Instead, to settle their differences they pit different teams of crack combat specialists against each other. Sponsored by a spaghetti company, the games are intended to subdue man's aggressive tendencies. During the 256th game [China vs The West) a radical French student intervenes and inadvertently causes the computer to assassinate a British soldier and the Chinese prisoner he loves.

EAT CONCRETE is about releasing all sorts of electronics - Techno, Ambient, Dub, Electro, Noise, Triphop, IDM and lots of experiments. It was founded by Pete Concrete, starting as a platform to spread music and mixes made by a network of friends. Going back to the early nineties, these people were responsible for dozens of parties, mainly not so legal. Using the name "Mononom" for both DJ-ing, playing live and releasing music on their own label, they were at the start of the free party scene in the Netherlands.

Under the big-top and dressed in outrageous circus garb, The Rolling Stones are joined by an all-star musical cast: Jethro Tull, The Who, Marianne Faithfull, Taj Mahal, Yoko Ono and the ad-hoc, one-time only, supergroup "The Dirty Mac" featuring John Lennon [guitar/vocals), Keith Richards [bass), Eric Clapton [guitar), fresh from his break-up with Cream, and Mitch Mitchell [drums) of The Jimi Hendrix Experience. With Mick Jagger as the show's literal ringmaster, the unscripted, unapologetic mayhem yielded timeless musical moments, including the first-ever performance of Stones classic-to-be "You Can't Always Get What You Want;" John Lennon's first concert before an audience outside The Beatles.
