MON ONCLE
Directed by Jacques Tati, France, 1958.
|
|
All the films of Jacques Tati criticise mindless modernization. When "Mon Oncle" was made, France was undergoing huge reconstruction and this film crystallizes an architectural anxiety. Not without sentimentality, and a lot of humour.
"Mon Oncle" is presented as a part of Public Space With A Roof's
"Intervening The Urban Void" project and is introduced by Manutau with a short cinema-performance.

A KNOCKOUT
Directed by Tessa Boerman + Samuel Reiziger, Netherlands, 2004.
|
|
How far would you go to win? "A Knockout" is the story of an undefeated world champion boxer whose career comes to a sudden end because she is not promotable. Michele Aboro [b. 1968] grew up in rough South London, where she learned from a very young age how to look out for herself. Thanks to her mentality and her talent for combat sports, she succeeded in putting her difficult past behind her. After securing a contract with the biggest boxing promoter in Europe, Michele won every match she fought, and it appeared that nothing would hold her back from a magnificent career in the sport she loved. Nothing, that is, until her promoter prematurely broke her contract. Marketing and promotion appear to be more important than her performance as a boxer. How far will Michele go to win a fight outside the ring as well?

TIBETAN REFUGEES:A Struggle Beyond Generations
Directed by Kunihiko Tanaka, Japan, 2002.
|
|
More than forty years have passed since the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, a Nobel laureate, was forced to flee his homeland. Yet Free Tibet remains a living struggle for his people.
In 1950, the People's Liberation Army invaded Tibet. Nine years later the Chinese occupation brutally suppressed the Tibetan people's resistance movement, forcing the Dalai Lama to flee for his life to India. Over 100,000 of his people followed him across the treacherous Himalayas, and thousands of refugees every year are still risking their lives, as gross abuse of human rights and ecological devastation continue in Tibet unchecked.

PRAHA 2000: IMF AND WORLD BANK UNDER SEIGE
Produced by Prague Indymedia Centre, 2000.
On September 26th, 2000, activists from around the world gathered to protest at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund's annual meeting in Prague. On the heels of persistent massive protests against global economic institutions, the protests in Prague marked the first time that trade unionists, students, anarchists, workers, pacifists, socialists, non-governmental organizations, communists, ecologists and many other groups came together under the banner of anti-globalization and anti-capitalism. In this video, interviews with organizers, demonstrators, observers, and theorists explain this new movement for freedom and why the IMF and World Bank are "under siege".
