SVERIGEDEMOKRATERNA HOLD PARTY CONGRESS IN STOCKHOLM

The fascist Sverigedemokraterna held their party congress in the Stockholm
suburb of Gubbängen on Saturday the 10th of September. Approximately 200
racist pensioners, young skinheads and other social misfits gathered in a
school building, hired under false pretenses, in order to hold their party
congress. Previous attempts to hire centrally-located community buildings
in Stockholm city have meet with resistance from the parliamentary
political establishment. Today's meeting meet with resistance from the
extra-parliamentary antifascist movement.
Already at the fascist redirectional point, the suburb of Tallkrogen,
antifascists, acting on a tip, as well as local residents, showed the
Sverigedemokraterna that they were not welcome in the area. The fascists
were encouraged to pack it in and leave and those that didn't immediately
heed these encouragements were taught a lesson they won't soon forget.
After several confrontations, the police arrived in a large force and
attempted to restore order.
Meanwhile the congress in Gubbängen began and another group of antifascists
gathered there, documenting the participants as they entered the building.
They were soon joined by the antifascists from Tallkrogen. The police
presence in Gubbängen increased and the school building was effectively
cordoned off by the police. Civilian police, local residents and
antifascists circulated in the immediate surroundings.
Later in the evening, when the congress was over, the police succeeded in
encircling the majority of the antifascists and allowed the
Sverigedemokraterna to leave the area without confrontation. However, all
congress participants leaving the building were documented by antifascists.
During the course of the day, the police harassed many antifascists, but no
arrests were made and the only injuries sustained were on the side of the
Sverigedemokraterna. Although the congress was not stopped, the
Sverigedemokraterna were not able to hold their congress unhindered and the
antifascist counter-actions of the day undoubtedly overshadowed the
congress activities.

NO ONE IS ILLEGAL MANIFESTATION

Approximately 70 people participated in a manifestation outside of the
refugee internment center located north of Stockholm in the suburb of
Upplands Väsby. Participants protested against the inhuman treatment of
refugees by the Swedish government and the fact that many refugees were
faced with being returned to their countries of origin and an uncertain
future in the hands of dictatorial regimes.
Speeches were held by the Swedish Refugee Committee, Ingen Människa är
Illegal-Stockholm, the Kenyan Socialist Youth Movement and as well as a
comrade from Kenya who currently faces expulsion, despite the fact that he
and his family have been living in Sweden for four years time.
Coinciding with the manifestation in Stockholm, a similar manifestation was
held in the southern Swedish city of Malmö with 300 participants.

TO BAN OR NOT TO BAN?

For the last month a public debate has raged in Germany about how to combat
the rise of the Far Right. The main issues are whether to ban the nazi NPD,
a move supported by the government, and a package of new repressive
legislation.
Militant anti-fascists have long argued that relying on the State to combat
the fascists is self-defeating. The State's function is to defend the
status quo, and that means from the Left as well as the Right. Writing in
the weekly Die Ziet, in an article called 'With the full force of the
State', leading German Social Democrat Klaus von Dohnanyi reveals the real
concerns of the government; he warns of the violence that can "erupt
against foreigners today, and against businessmen and politicians
tomorrow." Likewise a leading CSU (conservative) politician told a recent
rally in Munich that his party was against "the extremism of the Left and
of the Right."
The problem is, under the cover of bringing in legislation to deal with
racist violence today, the State is also protecting itself from working
class political unrest in the future. The similarities between the German
government's strategy to give itself greater powers and the British
government's exploitation of trouble at Euro 2000 are striking. In the name
of 'anti-racism' New Labour has begun to dismantle existing civil rights,
to the extent that you can be prevented from travelling on appearance alone.
In both Germany and Britain liberal anti-fascists argue that fascists are
criminals. Searchlight rely almost exclusively on this approach, and the
ANL demanded that the British State should "Jail all Nazis!" after the
trial of nazi nail bomber David Copeland. Once fascism is defined as 'a
crime' then it is logical that the forces of 'law and order' must deal with
the 'offenders'. Clearly the role of anti-fascists then is to become the
cheer-leaders for the police and the security forces? What nonsense! And of
course by 'criminalising' the nazis on account of their 'violence' you are
also rejecting the tradition of militant anti-fascism that has played a
vital role in both Germany and Britain.
Compounding the error, an article in the current issue of the SWP's
Socialist Review explains "why socialists in Germany are going beyond
simple calls for the NPD to be outlawed." As if it is not bad enough that a
so-called 'revolutionary' organisation can endorse the State's hijacking of
anti-fascism for its own ends, they qualify their support by adding
"official anti-fascism from above is limited". 'Official anti-fascism from
above' IS NOT ANTI-FASCISM AT ALL!
The British and German governments are using 'anti-fascism' and
'anti-racism' to introduce anti-working class measures. Anti-fascists must
be fiercely independent of these moves. Support for the Far Right in
Britain and Germany comes largely from the abandoned working class, and
unless anti-fascists are seen to have the interests of all sections of the
working class at heart, the Far Right will continue to grow. The Anyone But
Fascist (ABF) strategy, that sees the 'radical Left' backing the
conservatives in calling for State bans and increased repression, is the
abandonment of anti-fascism. The critical task for militant anti-fascists
at present, in both countries, is to side anti-fascism with working class
communities, not against them.

Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan spoke at a rally of the Far Right Danish
People's Party. Although the rally was specifically about rejecting the
euro, it is interesting to note how sections of the Conservative party have
made links with European Far Right parties such as the French FN, the
Austrian FPO and now the Danish DPP. With the collapse of the Referendum
Party, turmoil in the UKIP (which the BNP publicly hoped to exploit), and
recent electoral gains by the BNP, there is the possibility of the
mainstream Right seeking to steal the initiative from the Far Right as
happened in Germany and France. However in both cases it was the Far Right
who actually benefited, both by pointing out that they were the 'real
thing' and actually getting others to implement their policies.

HEAVY SENTENCES FOR RACIST MURDERERS IN GERMANY

Two and a half months after the murder of Mozambican Alberto Adriano in the
east German industrial town of Dessau, three neo-fascists have been awarded
heavy prison sentences. The regional high court of Nauenburg sentenced
24-year-old Enrico Hilprecht to a life sentence and the two 16-year-olds
who also participated in the killing each received nine-year sentences in a
youth prison.
The court concluded in its verdict that all three young men had acted out
of "hatred of foreigners" and had demonstrated "reckless disregard" for
their victim. The accused acknowledged the sentences without any show of
emotion. During the trial none of the accused showed any remorse for their
actions.
In hearings that were closed to the public, the court heard the testimony
of 27 witnesses and a number of experts. It was established that the three
neo-fascists attacked Adriano, a resident of Germany for the past 20 years,
in Dessau's main park on June 11. For several minutes they beat and kicked
him in the head, then stripped him of his clothes and robbed him.
The sentences differ dramatically from earlier sentences in trials of
neo-fascists. In September 1992 the local court in Frankfurt-Oder awarded
sentences ranging between two years on probation and four years
imprisonment for five men between the ages of 19 and 21 who, in the autumn
of 1990, beat an Angolan, Antonio Amadeu Kiowa, to death in Eberswalde. At
the time the wording of the court's verdict stated that sentences could not
serve as a means of deterrence or general prevention. Two years later the
regional court in Frankfurt-Oder threw out the prosecution of two policemen
who were accused of standing by and doing nothing as the Angolan man was
beaten to death.
In the trial concerning the devastating fire which gutted a house for
asylum-seekers in Lübeck in 1996, one of the occupants of the building,
Safwan Eid, himself a survivor of the fire, was accused of arson. Eid was
later acquitted, but the prosecuting state attorney consistently refused to
pursue evidence pointing to the involvement of a group of neo-fascists
known to have been in the vicinity of the blaze. Ten asylum-seekers lost
their lives in the Lübeck fire.
In the case of Alberto Adriano, presiding judge Albrecht Hennig adopted an
unusual tone in delivering his 45-minute verdict. "Senselessly, without
reason and pitilessly", a fellow human was beaten to death. The somewhat
slightly built skinheads even had to exert themselves in order to inflict
the injuries. "Animals treat an enemy on the ground with mercy,
neo-fascists apparently not," Hennig commented.
During the proceedings it was not possible to establish the individual
actions of the accused, as they remained largely silent. According to Judge
Hennig the long sentences for the two youth offenders was to have an
"educational purpose".
The judge then went into the social background to the killing. East Germany
in particular was marked by a shocking climate of racism, he said, and
Adriano was killed only because of the colour of his skin. Hennig referred
to the high number of acts of violence against foreigners in the east
German state of Sachsen-Anhalt, although foreigners constitute just 1.6
percent of the state's total population.
In the decade since German reunification 28 people had died as a result of
neo-fascist violence, three this year alone. The numbers of potentially
violent neo-fascists are growing continually and are currently estimated at
9,000 throughout Germany. According to the judge, "Half of them live in the
states of the former east Germany", although only 21 percent of Germany's
population lives in the eastern part of the country.
The killing should be seen against the background of the difficult economic
situation in the east German states, which provides the breeding ground for
right-wing violence. In order to illuminate the ideological climate to
which such youth were exposed, the judge recited passages from extreme
anti-Semitic and xenophobic texts from skinhead bands that have been banned
but are still, nevertheless, very popular amongst certain dubious circles:
"Our faces are full of hatred, violence for us is a pleasure...". A
so-called "Africa song" begins with the words, "Africa for apes. Europe for
whites. Stick the apes in a toilet and flush them away like s__t."
Criminal law is not an "effective means against human idiocy and racism",
the judge concluded in his verdict. Especially when in addition to criminal
acts there are "other indices" in society that are a "cause for concern".
The way in which the judge referred to the political background of the
crime contrasts sharply with the complacent phrases with which German
politicians have commented on the judgement. This applies above all to
Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who has just concluded a 10-day tour of the
east German states. In the town of Wittenberge, Schröder said the judgement
was an "appropriate punishment for an appalling crime". It shows "that the
state, police and legal system, independently from one another, are
establishing new limits which nobody should contravene," he said.
The minister president for the state of Sachsen-Anhalt, Reinhardt Höppner
(Social Democratic Party-SPD), described the judgement as "a clear signal
to all neo-fascist perpetrators of violence". At the same time he
emphasised that "right-wing extremist and xenophobic attitudes cannot be
countered merely with legal judgements and the consequent activity of the
state," appealing to the population to take responsibility.
The legal speaker for the Green fraction in the Bundestag was quoted
stating, "The state reacted in an appropriate and consequent fashion" and
that it was to be hoped that the judgement in this case would serve to
deter other potential violent criminals.
A day after the judgement and before a large media presence Chancellor
Schröder laid a wreath at the monument for Alberto Adriano in Dessau's main
park and repeated his phrase "an appropriate punishment for an appalling
crime". There was not a single indication of self-criticism, not a word to
explain how things could get to a stage where young persons aged 16 know
just hatred and misanthropy.
Chancellor Schröder and the entire ruling caste of politicians are trying
to give the impression that mass unemployment, the destruction of social
benefits and educational possibilities with the resulting lack of
perspective are just part of the natural state of things and not the result
of their own daily decisions. The intensifying social crisis means that the
general political and ideological climate in society is being increasingly
poisoned.
Two of the murderers in Dessau began their schooling 10 years ago at the
time of German reunification. At this crucial period of their lives they
were surrounded by people who, in very many cases, undertook a complete
about-turn with regard to their social and political views. Fundamental
social principles and norms appeared to be meaningless. Since then they
have grown up in a society in which any form of solidarity with the poor
and the weak has been terminated. Compassion and sympathy for one's fellow
man is regarded today as a sign of weakness. What counts is ruthlessness,
lack of scruples and harshness.
How is one to judge a society that no longer has anything to offer its
young generation and seeks to protect itself from their waywardness and
aggression by the highest possible jail sentences? Whoever genuinely
searches for the causes of the tragedy in Dessau cannot avoid taking a long
hard look at the state of a society that increasingly demonstrates signs of
profound sickness.

LOYALISTS AND FASCISTS LOBBY DOWNING ST

Armed with full colour glossy posters of their hero, the campaign for the
release of UDA/UFF death squad leader, Johnny Adair, found its way to
Westminster this afternoon. The posters carried by UDA supporters outside
the gates of Downing Street bore the slogans, "VICTIMISATION ? Free Johnny
Adair Now? His only crime is Loyalism."
Adair's wife, Gina, accompanied by two other loyalists (one of whom looked
suspiciously like the convicted gunrunner, Frank Portinari) handed in a
petition calling for her husband's immediate release from prison. Johnny
Adair was re-arrested and imprisoned during the recent loyalist feud at the
behest of Northern Ireland Secretary, Peter Mandelson, on the grounds that
he was directing a campaign of terror against his rivals in the UVF.
Thomas Potts, an Ulsterman billed as the "Loyalist Protest Leader", was
interviewed by Sky News. Mr Potts said, "Johnny Adair is 100% behind the
Good Friday Agreement and surely he should be released to continue the work
that he has started."
Perhaps sensing that not all in the north of Ireland share Potts'
estimation of Johnny as a peacemaker, the Sky reporter replied that, "Mr.
Mandelson would argue that he was fomenting violence; that he was provoking
the violence."
Potts' chilling retort was, "Prove it. Present the evidence to that case."
One other curious aspect of the lobby was the protesters themselves.
Clearly, it was a tiny minority of the placard carriers who had made the
journey from Ireland. The rest were a motley collection of men wearing
England baseball-caps in an effort to hide their faces and a crew of
skinheads from the National Front.
As well as Frank Portinari, another convicted loyalist gunrunner and
leading NF member, Terry Blackham, was pictured by Sky News wearing the UDA
T-Shirt favoured by Adair and those who marched with him recently at
Drumcree. It bore the slogan, "Simply The Best? UDA? Their only crime is
Loyalism."

POLICE MURDER DWIGHT TURNER STANDING ON HIS OWN PORCH
Northwest side worker attempted to stop stray dog and was shot dead

DETROIT, 9 Sept. 2000 (PANW)--Detroit Police have murdered another
African-American man in the northwest area of the city on Friday morning.
Dwight Turner, who was standing on his porch on Robson street, was holding
a licensed hand gun in an attempt to stop a marauding dangerous dog that
was terrorizing the community.
Witnesses say that Turner was in the process of dropping the weapon in
response to police when he was shot twice in the chest and killed.
Members of Turner's family and co-workers said that he was a "kind-hearted
man who would never point a gun at police." Critics of police policy in
Detroit have cited this incident as another travesty of justice where
officers are quick to shoot at civilians without provocation.
Police Chief Benny Napoleon has defended the officers response to the
Turner shooting. However, Ron Scott of the Detroit Coalition Against Police
Brutality was highly critical of the shooting, placing it within the
context of the recent murder of Errol Shaw, Sr., a deaf-mute
African-American who was killed in his driveway on August 29 in the same
section of town as Friday's murder of Dwight Turner.
Turner was on vacation from his automobile production job where he
reportedly earned over $70,000 per year.
Scott said that "it is an unlikely scenario for an individual who works
every day, who lives in the neighborhood and who has been characterized as
a peaceful person to suddenly point a gun at police," the spokesperson for
the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality said.
Detroit has the highest rate of police murders of residents in the entire
United States. The city has paid out over $32 million dollars in legal
judgements involving police misconduct and brutality in recent years.

NO TRIAL IN FREDERICK FINLEY'S MURDER BY MALL GUARDS
African-American died after being choked outside Lord & Taylor Store

DETROIT, 6 Sept. 2000 (PANW)--A part-time security guard who held a
29-year-old African-American consumer on the ground, choking him, leading
to his death, will not stand trial for involuntary manslaughter or any
other criminal charges.
This was the ruling of a Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Wednesday after
the completion of a preliminary hearing on whether there was enough
evidence for the security guard to stand trial in the case.
Frederick Findley, his companion and their 9-year-old daughter had shopped
at the Lord & Taylor store located at the Fairlane Mall on June 22 in
Dearborn. Four of the store's private guards followed the family out to the
parking lot, accusing the daughter of shoplifting a bracelet.
A confrontation ensued resulting in the tackling of Findley and the
application of pressure on his neck. However, the Court's ruling based on
the testimony of forensic pathologists, was that the cause of death was an
enlarged heart and not the actions of the security guards.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office has stated that it will appeal the
Judge's decision.

SWEDISH ANARCHIST MAGAZINE BRAND UNDER STATE ATTACK

On August 31st, the Swedish Ministry of Justice decided to charge Brand
magazine for incitement to insurrection, which is a breach of the freedom
of the press, according to Swedish law. The Brand issue in question,
released on nternational Women's day, March 8th, 2000, was immediately upon
its release charged by the Swedish Secret Police (SÄPO).
Brand is an anarchist magazine that has existed since 1898. The current
editorial collective was founded in 1995. In honour of International
Women's day, a theme-issue that concerned sex roles and stereotypes in
Swedish women's magazines such as VeckoRevyn and Frida, as well as Swedish
men's magazines Slitz and Café was produced. The issue was full of columns
for sex-tips, test-yourself questionnaires, do-me-over columns and the
front cover was even graphically designed to resemble that of VeckoRevyn.
We also wrote a parody of VeckoRevyns's "How to make your party a success",
which we entitled "How to make your riot a success, from A to Z". This is
the article that has SÄPO and the Swedish state up in arms. We think this
is ridiculous, as if one was to read the article, they could not help
notice the fact that the article is satirical and a parody of those types
of actions that the Swedish anarchist movement currently execute. From A to
Z covers small explanations of what!
a) "barricades", "cobble stones", "Zebra patterned sports jackets", "Xena
the Warrior Princess" and is accompanied with text such as "It is extremely
easy to riot in high heels" and "Zebra sports jackets are no longer
fashionable in riot situations". The riot-guide is a satirical poke at the
powers that be. However, we who work with Brand are activists and by
borrowing VeckoRevyn's format we wanted to turn a romantic portrayal of
violence and a macho actionist-culture upside down and in a ironic way look
at ourselves. We must also mention that the text was laid out with
baby/blue and pink colours as well as a picture of the Spice Girls.
Why has this article caused such a storm? Well, according to the geniuses
at SÄPO, the spectacular house squat in Linköping on March 17th, only a
week or two after the issue hit the streets, was inspired by the article.
The only witness in the upcoming trial against Brand will be a policeman
from Linköping who is to testify that the squatters used this article as a
guide in their action.
Within various philosophical schools this is usually called a "faux pas".
"Brand wrote about barricades and cobblestones, the squatters used
barricades and cobblestones and the squatters did this because they had
read Brand". This knowledge was not taken from our riot parody. Buildings
have been squatted in Sweden during the last fifteen years by the Swedish
anarchist movement. And there as been an abundance of rioting during the
same time. The squat in Linköping was not at all unique. Examples are the
squat of Folkungagatan in Stockholm in 1990 and the squat of the "Gamla
Mejeriet" in Västerås at the outcome of the EU-referendum in 1994. At both
of these squats the same methods were used. Squatters used barricades and
masks, they threw stones and Molotov cocktails and they shot projectiles
with sling shots in order to keep the Violent Swedish police at bay. These
means of proletarian struggle are well described in a number of handbooks
and manuals, for instance Lila Svarta. That which stood in Brand was
nothing new.
We regard this judicial process as a frightening tendency from SÄPO to
attack the dissident press when they want to attack activism. The trial
against Linus Brohult and the magazine Ekologisten this past spring, after
Socialekologisk Aktions sabotage against the motorway Södra Länken paved
the way for this new method. We regard this in the context that SÄPO must
be reading every millimetre of Brand in the hunt for something to charge
the magazine with. The Ministry of Justice wants to confiscate all the
copies of the magazine they can come across. In this point we must
disappoint them. This issue was so popular that it is completely sold out!

On September 27, Tomasz Wilkoswewski's case will be heard in court here in
Warsaw. He has already served more than 4 years out of a 15-year sentence
for the murder of a nazi skinhead committed in self-defense during an
attack. We are trying to help publicize his case and are asking for your
solidarity. Please send information about Tomek to all the ABC groups you
know and ask people to write with protests. We really would like to help
out in some way and we think that if different groups could take a few
minutes to write letters, it would help. If they could send copies of their
protests to this address, we could also translate them into Polish. We
really would appreciate any show of solidarity we can get. Poor Tomek has
been totally victimized in this case and needs to get out of jail soon
before long-term imprisonment takes its toll on his health and his spirits.

Tomasz Wilkoszewski (Tomek), is from Radomsk, a medium-sized, working-class
city with a skinhead problem. Tomasz was one of only a handful of
anarchists in this city which has recently become more and more
economically depressed as a result of the destruction of Polish industry.
The local skinheads would constantly be on the prowl for these anarchists,
often attacking them and in effect, terrorizing them. Tomasz could have
fled the city, as so many people in similar situations are forced to do,
but instead he decided he'd stay - but that he's have to carry a weapon to
defend himself. In March of 1996, the worst happened. Tomasz was attacked
again and fought back with his knife. Unfortunately, he cut an artery when
he stabbed one of his attackers in the leg and the person died. Clearly,
there was no intent on Tomasz's part to committ a murder; he was only
trying to defend himself. It probably does not need to be said that local
police did nothing to prevent the attacks that eventually lead up to the
tragedy in the first place.
Tomasz was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison. At the time, he
had not even finished high school. The sentence is exceptionally harsh
compared to others normally given in Poland; such sentences are reserved
for premeditated murders and felonies committed by hardened criminals.
Gazeta Wyborcza wrote about this case years ago and presented it as a
tragedy - and as the failure of society, including the police, to control
such street violence that may end in murder. It is that, but even more so,
it is a case of the police looking the other way as skinheads terrorize the
town and then blaming the victim who would not take it any more. Tomek's
case is important not only to us as anarchists, his comrades, but also to
anybody who wants to put a stop to police-endorsed violence against
anarchists, leftists, immigrants, and anybody targetted by these ring-wing
thugs.
We think that some protest letters will help; we have a petition, but think
that short notes by e-mail from abroad would be even better. I am sending a
small sample text but think it would be even better if people added their
own personal touches; it will show more than an international campaign - it
will show that people are thinking about Tomek and people like him around
the world.

On September 27, the case of Tomasz Wilkosweski will be heard before your

with tragic events occurring in Radomsk in March of 1996. Tomasz was given
a harsh murder sentence despite the fact that it is clear that the tragic
events were a result of his attacking in self-defense after having been

Nick Wood in Pristina reports on a UN claim that American officials
withheld evidence linking a leading politician to a gunfight, drugs and war
crimes
American officials in Kosovo are being accused of interfering with an
investigation into a senior Kosovo Albanian politician implicated in
murder, drug-trafficking and war crimes.
Ramush Haradinaj, a former commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA),
was the key US military and intelligence asset in Kosovo during the civil
war and the Nato bombing campaign that followed.
In the latest twist in the saga of an increasingly flawed electoral
process, United Nations police in the province complain that US personnel
withheld evidence about a gunfight involving Haradinaj, who is now head of
one of the province's leading political groups.
UN investigators leading the case say US officials based at their main
base, Camp Bondsteel, removed forensic evidence from the scene of the gun
battle, including bullets retrieved from walls. The incident, which took
place in the village of Strellc in the west of Kosovo, is well out of the
US Army's area of responsibility, which lies in the south-east of the
province.
Following the shooting Haradinaj, known almost universally in the province
as simply Ramush, was flown by helicopter to Camp Bondsteel and then onto
Germany to be treated in an US Army hospital for shrapnel wounds. UN
investigators were denied access to him during that time.
Evidence from the incident was eventually handed over after angry phone
calls from Fred Pascoe, the American policeman heading the UN
investigation.
The news of American reluctance to co-operate with the investigation comes
amid a catalogue of accusations linking Haradinaj to murder, drugs
trafficking and war crimes.
The shooting revolved around a dispute between Haradinaj and members of the
Musaj family, who accuse him of ordering the murder of their brother and
three other men shortly after the arrival of Nato troops in Kosovo in June
1999. The men were all part of FARK (Armed Force of the Republic of Kosovo
), a rival group to the Kosovo Liberation Army.
Three Musaj brothers had visited Haradinaj's father to demand the bones of
their brother, a right they had according to Albanian custom. Haradinaj
admits he went to the Musaj family home at around one in the morning to
stop the brothers from visiting his father again.
This is the second time this year Haradinaj has been caught up in violence.
He was injured in a fight with Russian soldiers at a K-For checkpoint in
the spring. Western diplomats say he has damaged his party's prospects in
UN-organised local elections due this October.
This latest incident does not appear to have damaged his contacts with US
military or political figures.
His party officials were invited to a discussion on the future of Kosovo at
a meeting organised by the US state department. He himself is currently in
Washington on a fund-raising trip and as the guest of a US Congressman,
Benjamin Gillman.
His standing with the international community is summed up by British
officials who describe him as 'one of the few former commanders of the KLA
who can deliver'. They say he was crucial in smoothing over the transition
of the KLA from a guerrilla army to a civilian-based national guard.
But British military personnel who liaised with Haradinaj before and during
the Nato bombing campaign paint a different picture. One former soldier,
who served with the Kosovo Verification Mission, described him as 'a
psychopath' and accused him of terrorising his own men and the local
population into loyalty to him. 'He would beat his own men to maintain a
kind of military discipline,' he said.
'Someone would pass him some information and he would disappear for two
hours. The end result would be several bodies in a ditch,' he added
The man said he was also present when Ramush 'went to deal with' an
Albanian family who had let Serb police into their house. The incident
matches a human rights report issued by the OSCE (Organisation for Security
and Cooperation in Europe) last year in which seven masked men entered a
house in the village of Gornja Lucka. Two men were beaten and a third was
taken to a nearby canal and never seen again.
During this time the same former soldier says Haradinaj was maintaining
daily contact with American military personnel in the US and that these
links were then taken over by Nato at the beginning of the bombing campaign
in Kosovo.
Another alleged victim of Ramush's men was Suad Qorraj, who had operated a
satellite telephone for a rival KLA commander during the war. His family
say he went missing from the town of Decani on 23 June 1999, two weeks
after the end of the war. On 1 August Suad's charred remains were found in
a nearby forest. The burial notice said he had been 'killed by Serbs'.
A year on from Suad's death, Haradinaj still wields considerable power in
western Kosovo. 'He can very easily bring the area to a halt,' says Robert
Charmbury, UN administrator of the biggest town in the region, Pec, citing
as evidence the fight against Russian peace keepers in which the town was
'blockaded in minutes'.
The Alliance party has strong representation on local municipal boards and
is discussing the possibility of a pact with the Kosovan Democratic Party
(PDK), led by Hashim Thaci, former political leader of the KLA. Such a deal
might squeeze out the favourites to win in the region, the Democratic
League of Kosovo, in October's elections.
Whatever the outcome of the polls, senior UN officials are concerned about
Haradinaj's long-term impact on the province. One aide claims Haradinaj is
now financed by two men, Naser Kelmendi and Ekrem Lluka, both of whom are
suspected to be involved in smuggling. UN police reports, seen by The
Observer, go further and describe Lluka as trafficking drugs and cigarettes
in Greece, Kosovo, Albania and Italy.
Meanwhile the Musaj brothers are worried about what Haradinaj will do in
the next few weeks. 'If he doesn't attack us before the elections he'll
attack us afterwards,' said Sadic Musaj. He and his brother have already
built up the walls around their compound in case of another attack. He
doubts however whether anybody will take action against Ramush. 'Nothing
will happen, he has strong people behind him.'

BUTLER: RACISTS TO STAY IN IDAHO

HAYDEN LAKE, Idaho (AP) - Aryan Nations leader Richard Butler vowed
Saturday he will not leave northern Idaho, despite a $6.3 million judgment
against his racist organization.
At a news conference on the 20-acre Aryan Nations compound, Butler said he
did not have the $960,000 in cash bond that would be required for him to
appeal the judgment issued Thursday by a civil jury Thursday.
But he said his neo-Nazi sect would continue, even if the compound is
seized to pay the judgment as he expects.
``They cannot run me out of northern Idaho with my tail between my legs,''
Butler said from a church pulpit, standing next to a silver bust of Adolf
Hitler. He said he may seek a new trial.
A jury found that Butler and his organization were negligent in selecting
and overseeing security guards who assaulted Victoria Keenan and her son
Jason in 1998. Jurors awarded the damages to the Keenans, who were chased,
shot at and assaulted after they stopped their car near the entrance to the
Aryan Nations' compound.
Morris Dees, co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery,
Ala., represented the Keenans and has said he intends to take everything
the Aryan Nations owns to pay the judgment, including the sect's name.
Butler compared his trial to trials in the former Soviet Union under
dictator Josef Stalin. He said local ``politicians want to improve the
image of Idaho by mongrelizing the white race up here.''
Idaho politicians and community leaders expressed hope after last week's
judgment that Butler would leave the area and take his organization with
him.
Instead, Butler, 82, has applied for a permit to hold another parade down
the streets of nearby Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in October.
He bemoaned the expected loss of the compound, which he bought nearly 30
years ago and includes his home and church and has been the site of annual
gatherings by his supporters.
``This place was built on love,'' Butler said. ``It is a place to worship
with your own kind.''
There has been speculation that two wealthy computer industry executives
who have been supportive of Butler in recent years might come to his
financial aid. But Butler said Saturday that he has not asked Vincent
Bertollini or Carl Story, both of Sandpoint, Idaho, to pay the judgment.
``They don't have that kind of money,'' Butler said. ``We never talked
about it.''
Butler also praised attorney Edgar Steele of Sandpoint for taking his case,
even though he said Steele did not share the Aryan Nations' views.
``Mister Steele took the case for me out of his concern for freedom of
speech,'' Butler said. ``For the past two weeks, freedom of speech has been
on trial.''

FBI CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK

That I'm no Biblical scholar is an understatement of monumental
proportions. And yet, recently I found myself -- for reasons I'll explain
shortly -- thinking of the following verse from the book of Matthew, if
memory serves:
Why behold the mote in thy brother's eye, but consider not the beam in
thine own eye?
Arcane language aside, let it suffice to say this verse has something to do
with what we'd now refer to as the "pot calling the kettle black."
Upon reading the headline of my local paper a few weeks ago, I couldn't
help but think of these pots, and kettles, and motes, and beams. For there,
in black and white was the following:
"Police role in Holocaust added to FBI Agent's training."
According to the article, FBI Director Louis Freeh has implemented new
training for Bureau recruits, to "teach of the failure of law enforcement
to protect citizen's rights," in Nazi Germany. According to Freeh, the
course will demonstrate the evil of law enforcement when it "abandons its
mission to protect people," and becomes "an engine of repression."
Applauded by the Anti-Defamation League, the new training takes recruits on
a guided tour of the Holocaust Museum and then asks them to write essays on
the relevance of the training to their work. One recruit who went through
the process explained it had made clear his duty to "preserve human life
and protect the civil rights of every man, woman and child."
How nice. Presumably if Hitler ever comes back, this recruit will make sure
to stand tall against the impending threat of German fascism, since
apparently, that's the only kind worth fretting over, and the only kind
capable of teaching the lesson intended here. The pot calling the kettle
black, indeed.
One hardly need travel thousands of miles away and a half-century back in
time to demonstrate the complicity of law enforcement with repression.
Frankly, new FBI recruits would do better to learn about the nefarious
history of their own employer, which provides more than enough examples of
the same phenomena Freeh seeks to demonstrate.
The new training spends a great deal of time discussing the passivity of
German law enforcement in the face of growing repression under the Third
Reich. But we needn't look to Hitler's regime for that lesson.
After all, FBI agents were notorious for standing around, watching, and
doing nothing while civil rights workers and freedom riders were beaten by
racists throughout the South in the 1960's.
Just ask Howard Zinn: he'll tell you how FBI agents looked him in the eye
and insisted they had no power to do anything, even as Selma, Alabama
police below the Bureau's own window, dragged, beat, and shocked with stun
guns those seeking to register black voters.
Or how, in 1964, J. Edgar Hoover waited 37 hours after the disappearance of
three other civil rights workers in Philadelphia, Mississippi before
finally beginning a pathetically weak investigation.
Or how FBI operative, Gary Rowe, rode along with the assassins of Viola
Liuzzo, after the Selma to Montgomery march, knowing they planned to kill
someone, and yet, did nothing.
And as for the new training's discussion of how law enforcement sometimes
takes an active role in repression, here too it's hardly necessary to study
German history.
As noted in Michael Linfield's book, Freedom Under Fire, by the late
1920's, the FBI had already compiled an "enemies list" of nearly
half-a-million suspected "subversives," and in 1936, even as Hitler was
consolidating his power, President Roosevelt authorized the Bureau to spy
on organizations considered "dangerous." Four years later, FDR would
authorize massive wiretapping by the Bureau, increasing the number of
"anti-subversive" investigations to nearly 70,000 annually. From 1947-1952,
the FBI conducted roughly 6.6 million "security investigations" of U.S.
citizens: about 3000 such actions every day.
And for involvement with direct repression, you can't get much better than
the 2,400 or so FBI COINTELPRO operations to "disrupt and neutralize"
targeted groups and individuals from the mid-'50-'s to 1971. According to
declassified documents and a Senate Committee investigation (about which I
doubt FBI recruits are informed), the Bureau actively attempted to
discredit and destroy the civil rights movement, the antiwar movement, and
dozens of organizations dedicated to Black, Latino, and Indigenous
liberation.
Martin Luther King Jr. may be a revered icon today, but from the early
1960's until his death, the Bureau marked him for political (if not
literal) destruction by wiretapping his phones (with the approval of
Attorney General and liberal hero Bobby Kennedy), as well as spreading
rumors about marital infidelity and sending him letters encouraging him to
commit suicide. A month before his assassination, Hoover wrote that there
was a need to "pinpoint potential trouble- makers" in the black movement,
"and neutralize them." William Sullivan -- the agent in charge of the
anti-King operation -- told the Senate, "No holds were barred. We've used
similar techniques against Soviet agents. We did not differentiate. This is
a rough business."
One suspects the new recruits are too busy learning about the suppression
of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising to be told that the agency they've joined
conspired with Chicago police in 1969 to assassinate Black Panther Party
leader Fred Hampton, by providing them with detailed floor plans of
Hampton's apartment prior to a raid they knew the police were planning to
launch. Or that the Bureau collaborated with other police departments in
killing nearly 30 Panthers in the late '60's and early '70's.
One imagines the new FBI recruits writing heartfelt essays about the
horrors of Kristallnacht, while studiously ignoring their employer's
admitted role in fomenting the factional dispute within the Nation of Islam
that led to the assassination of Malcolm X, or their all-out war on the
American Indian Movement that led to the murder of over seventy residents
of Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
I can only guess that these FBI recruits will emerge from their Holocaust
training with a newfound revulsion for the support given racism and Nazism
by German police, but with no knowledge of their own agency's financial
support of a group of white supremacists from California who attacked
Chicano activists and tried to murder anti-war activist Peter Bohmer in
1972.
Figuring that most of the new recruits probably grew up in the Reagan
'80's, they should perhaps know -- but I'm sure won't be told -- that even
after COINTELPRO, the FBI continued spying on domestic organizations. Early
in his administration, President Reagan -- himself a former FBI informant
against fellow actors -- issued Executive Order 12333, allowing the FBI to
wiretap without a warrant and engage in undercover operations against
organizations opposed to his Central America policies.
One of the FBI's key infiltrators in this period, Frank Varelli, has said
the FBI paid him to destroy the Dallas chapter of the Committee in
Solidarity With the People of El Salvador (CISPES) by burglarizing member
homes, recruiting thugs to start fights at CISPES rallies, and even
seducing an activist nun so as to procure blackmail photos for use against
the group. The FBI encouraged him to plant guns on CISPES members, and
Varelli regularly passed information on U.S. and Central American-based
activists to the Salvadoran National Guard: the entity in control of that
nation's vicious death squads, responsible for the deaths of tens of
thousands of Salvadorans.
And I would imagine Freeh's new foot soldiers will learn all about the
diabolical experiments conducted on twins by Joseph Mengele, but nothing
about the program operated by the FBI's sister agency -- the CIA -- called
MK ULTRA, whereby unsuspecting residents of the San Francisco Bay area were
intentionally exposed to a whooping cough virus, and unwitting hospital
patients were subjected to chemical experiments using hallucinogenic drugs.
And while we're on the subject of Nazis, one can only wonder if the
Holocaust Museum will mention that after World War Two, U.S. intelligence
agencies helped over 5,000 Nazi scientists and doctors find refuge in the
states, including many who had been directly involved in mass atrocities.
Somehow, I doubt it.
That the Anti-Defamation League is giddy about the new training ought to be
enough evidence that there is something wrong with it: after all, it was
this group's San Francisco area affiliates who were exposed in the early
'90's as having spied on, and passed information to the FBI about, assorted
Central American peace and justice activists, as well as anti-apartheid
activists and those supporting Palestinian rights and liberation. Birds of
a feather, are, in this instance, flocking very closely together.
Let this serve as yet another exhibit item, to be filed away under "passing
the buck," 101: yet further proof that we are more than comfortable
discussing the crimes of others, but still unwilling to peek under the hood
